Here are some of the driveway related questions we have been most often asked over the years..

What type of driveway is cheapest?

Aggregate, or gravel, is the cheapest and most durable of these four common driveway materials

What is the best type of driveway to have?

Among the most durable options on the market is a concrete driveway surface. Although it provides a hard and stable surface, that is highly dependant on professional installation, high upfront costs, maintenance, and weather conditions.

What is the average cost of a driveway UK?

Based on the average driveway size of just 60m2 you could expect to pay around £2,106 for this, with installation and other materials on top. If you’re looking for a modern twist on the traditional block paving, Marshalls Coppice is £28.02 per m2, costing around £1,883 to cover a driveway of 60m2.

Do you need planning permission for a driveway?

When Will You Need Planning Permission for Your Driveway? In simple terms, you won’t need planning permission if you intend your new driveway (regardless of its size) to use permeable or porous surfacing that allows liquid (such as rainwater) to drain through.

Is block paving cheaper than concrete?

For a good quality driveway, you need good quality materials – and they don’t come cheap. As such, you’ll often find that block paving materials are more expensive, but are longer-lasting, than imprinted concrete.

Is it cheaper to tarmac or block pave?

The materials for tarmac are often cheaper, and the labour costs will be lower because tarmac takes less time to lay. That said, block paving only costs 10% more on average.

How much does a block paved driveway cost UK?

The block paving cost for driveways in the UK can range from anywhere between £3,000 and £7,000. There are exceptions, of course. Particularly large or complex driveways could cost closer to £10,000 – it’s all relevant.

What is the best base for block paving?

Kiln-dried sand is the best sand for block paving joints. It’s an extremely fine sand that’s been dried in a kiln to remove all the water before being used.

What are the disadvantages of resin driveways?

Resin bound driveways and surfacing aren’t the best choice for areas that regularly endure heavy traffic and usage, but are perfect for most residential driveways and paths. This type of surface is quite durable, robust and easy to clean.

How long do resin driveways last?

Resin bound paving is a long lasting durable surface. While guarantees vary between 10 – 21 years, when properly installed and maintained, can last for more than 25 years. It requires minimal maintenance: there are no weeds to ‘weed’ or loose stone to sweep.

Is a resin driveway cheaper than block paving?

Overall resin-bound paved driveways are similar in price to block paving. There are of course many factors to consider such as the size of the area, the condition of the surface that you are laying on, materials used and the amount of labour.

What are the problems with block paving?

Provided the surface is laid properly, surface compaction is not usually an issue. However, drainage issues can occur due to joints getting blocked by detritus, which can compact within the gaps.

Is block paving cheaper than slabs?

Block paving is a little bit more expensive than slabs, but there really isn’t much in it. For the increase in quality, we would certainly recommend opting for block paving.

How important is a driveway?

You may be considering whether your drive is worth upgrading, or about adding one to your home. You may be surprised to learn that a driveway does add value to your home. We estimate a driveway can increase your property’s value by 5-10%. That is quite a return on investmant for an area you do not really need to pay a lot to improve.

What are the advantages of a gravel driveway?

Gravel surfaces are quickly and easily installed, and maintenance is minimal. Using aggregates is also a way to create beautiful, individualised landscaping. The colours and materials available are endless so creating unique paving can add to the aesthetics of a home.

Does a driveway need drainage?

In simple terms, any new driveway over 5m2 must provide a drainage system for the water to run to a permeable area.

How do I get rid of water on the bottom of my driveway?

You have a few options for drainage, with two of the most common options being either to install a drainage channel or a soakaway. A drainage channel that covers the entirety of the width of the driveway, where the drainage problems are occurring, will help to transport the pool of water away from your home.

What is a drain in a driveway called?

Channel drainage, also known as linear drainage, is a popular choice because it is simple to design and install.

What is a good base for driveway?

A commonly used gravel size for driveway base layers is #3 gravel. This rock is generally 1-2 inches in diameter and does double duty by establishing a solid, reliable foundation and providing adequate drainage; both critical factors in driveway construction.

How deep should a driveway base be?

Make sure the gravel layer is at least 50mm (5cm) deep and the gravel surface is spread across the surface. Simply rake over the entire area to help distribute the gravel evenly.

Does a gravel driveway need frequent maintenance?

Once every couple of years to keep the look and performance of your surface, it’s best to add fresh gravel at two yearly intervals, or more frequently if that’s what is required. All these issues are entirely natural through normal, day to day use of a gravel driveway and simply addressed.

How do you maintain a resin driveway?

In order to remove leaves, sand soil and such like materials from resin-bound paving, it can be swept clean with a stiff brush. Hosing the resin surface down with clean water will also clean the paving. It is common that regular brushing and washing is the only maintenance required for resin-bound surfacing.

Can you power wash a resin drive?

As such, we highly recommend scheduling a periodic cleaning of your resin driveway, patio or other surface to ensure its integrity and beauty remain intact. When trusted to the professionals, a power or jet wash can be effectively utilised to clean resin bound driveways and other surfaces.

How long does a resin driveways last?

Resin bound paving is a long lasting durable surface. While guarantees vary between 10 – 21 years, when properly installed and maintained, can last for more than 25 years. It requires minimal maintenance: there are no weeds to ‘weed’ or loose stone to sweep.

How often should block paving be sealed?

Your block paving sealant should last up to 2 years providing you use a quality product and maintain the paving regularly. If the sealant does begin to fade after 2 years you can apply a fresh coat.

How do you stop weeds growing through block paving?

White vinegar is readily available, cheap, and an effective weed killer for block paving. It dries out weeds on contact – you can use white vinegar on younger weeds or vinegar with a higher concentration for older weeds, such as weed killer vinegar, which can be picked up at any garden shop/supermarket.
